About The Center for Human Services
The Center for Human Services is recognized as a national leader in disseminating knowledge and skills in the human services. Through professional services and training, The Center translates research and theory into practice, fosters partnerships which create opportunities for individuals, agencies and communities, and improves the quality of life for vulnerable children, adults and families.
Among the professional services offered are leadership and organization development programs which respond to each agency's particular needs. Services such as coaching, facilitation and operation reviews reflect increasing agency requests for services that help improve and meet future challenges.
The training presented on this site includes more than 450 workshops and programs for managers, supervisors, workers and support staff in child welfare, eligibility, employment services, child care, substance abuse, mental health and fraud investigation.
Through interagency training, institute and conferences, The Center also serves a broader spectrum of organizations which help vulnerable families and children. This includes public health agencies, adult and juvenile justice organizations, law enforcement, human services professionals, healthcare providers, community-based organizations, educators, concerned citizens and policymakers.
The Center began in 1979 with a federal grant to provide child welfare training in Northern California counties. Three years later The Center broadened its program to offer eligibility worker training. In the early 1990s The Center extended its services to other public agencies involved with realignment of health and welfare services in California. During this time The Center also expanded automation training opportunities, and today helps agencies use the CWS/CMS system.
The Center now offers more than 3,000 training sessions a year, enrolling more than 65,000 participants.
Faculty
The Center's faculty includes more than 250 instructors with extensive experience in human services and training. Many are agency managers, supervisors, workers or trainers. The Center's faculty has earned wide respect for its combination of practical experience, subject matter expertise and skill in teaching adults.
The Center conducts a careful, thorough hiring and orientation process for instructors. In addition, The Center regularly holds faculty training sessions at UC Davis to cover new training techniques and changes affecting agencies.
To ensure a consistently high quality of instruction, evaluations are conducted in each workshop and thoroughly reviewed.

The Center's programs must meet the standards of the University of California. This association with one of the best systems of higher education in the country is another assurance of quality.
Supported by Professional Staff
All Center programs are developed and coordinated by professional staff with experience in human services, training program delivery and customer service.
Fees
Fees for professional services on-site training are based on the costs of curriculum development, delivery and evaluation. Training programs, workshops and institutes can be provided on a contract basis to states, local agencies or private nonprofit organizations.
Procedures of the California Department of Social Services enable county welfare departments to contract with public educational institutions for training. Educational institutions may provide matching funds, resulting in training at no cost to the county.
